The design story:

Phoenix (Ancient Greek folklore, phoînix), Turkish (Anka, Zümrüdüanka), Persian (Homa – Quqnūs – Simorgh) is a mythical bird symbolizing fire and ice and that regenerate and obtain a new life from arising from the ashes of its predecessor.
Simorgh (meaning literally thirty (si) birds (morgh)) is a story from the Persian poet Farid u-din Attar, from his book Conference of the Birds.
The story recounts the longing of a group of birds who search for a leader. They decide the legendary “Simorgh” should be their’ king so they go on a journey to find him. They journey over seven valleys each representing one stage of attainment to wholeness.
One by one, the birds drop out, unable to fulfill the challenging journey. Eventually only thirty (si) birds (morgh) reach the land of “Simorgh”, but instead of finding their spiritual leader, all they saw was their own reflection in a lake. The birds realize that all along they were the “Simorgh” and that they are not separate from the universe, they are one with it.

Design process

To create a timeless yet symbolic logo for this competition, I opted to design the famous ancient phoenix bird as the brand’s logo. phoenix bird is culturally symbolic between all the participated countries. My logo design, also inspired the design for the singing contest final award, a golden phoenix, agreed by the organizers.

Color palette

Contemporary combination of red and blue colors were used, symbolizing fire and ice exemplified as the Pheonix in the logo. The selection of the blue color in the pallet was also to incorporate Turkish ancestry. While phoenix has been portrayed as a raptorial and strong bird, I re-modeled the head and the beak showcasing, peace and unity between the participated countries in the contest. This was further highlighted by projecting the phoenix flying over the title of the contest, using turquoise, blue and red colors.
